Abstract:

Based on Sentinel-2 images in 2022 and historical records about the reservoirs in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China from 1942 to 2022, we extracted the spatial distribution of the reservoirs (which area is bigger than 0.001 km²) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China to develop the spatio-temporal dataset of reservoirs in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China (1942-2022). The attribute data of the dataset includes the reservoir name, latitude, longitude, average elevation, built year, total capacity and maximum area, and river basin, etc. Then we analysis the reservoirs in large, medium, and small size based on the standards of hydro-power projects and the capacity of the reservoirs. The results show that up to 2022, 804 reservoirs with a total capacity of 24.16 km³ have been constructed in Xinjiang, of which the number of large, medium, and small reservoir are 37, 175, and 592 respectively, and the number of plain reservoirs and mountain reservoirs are 461 and 343, respectively, and the percentage of large mountain reservoirs has increased significantly since 1980. This dataset consists of: (1) spatial distribution data of reservoirs in Xinjiang, 1942-2022; (2) reservoir attribute data, which includes records of attributes such as the reservoir name, area, capacity, built year, elevation, location, and river basin, etc. The dataset is archived in .shp and .xlsx formats, and consists of 9 data files with data size of 21.4 MB (compressed into 1 file with 5.86 MB).
