Abstract:

The Strait of Malacca, located between Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, is a passage connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Land cover dataset within 40 km from coastline along the Straits of Malacca (1990, 2000, 2010, 2017) was developed based on integrating Landsat TM/OLI images and the ecological indexes and the decision tree, as well as the supervised classification methods. Firstly, the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index), BSI (Bare Soil Index) and NDBI (Normalized Difference Built-Up Index) were calculated based on the Landsat TM/OLI images. And then, the land cover classification data were extracted by the comprehensive utilization above index methods, decision tree classification and supervised classification methods. Lastly, the data validation was made with Google Earth high-resolution images. The data result indicates that, from 1990 to 2017, the annual artificial surface and farmland in the west bank of Malaysia peninsular increased by 6.55% and 1.20% respectively, and the forestland decreased by 1.46%. The annual artificial surface and farmland in the east bank of Sumatra increased by 11.45% and 2.42% respectively, and the forestland decreased by 1.15% annual. The data spatial resolution is 30 m. The dataset is consisted of 8 data files in .tif format with data size of 3.36 GB (Compressed to a single file, 47.9 MB).
