Abstract:
Recognizing the Northern China’ Farming-Pastoral Ecotone (FPE) boundary changes will help human activities in natural resources management and ecosystem protection in this region. Two types of indicators were used to delineate the FPE, one was climate index and another was land use index. The Northern China’ Farming-Pastoral Ecotone Boundaries Dataset (1970-2010) was developed based on the process of the data from the 197 meteorological stations in the study region between 1970 and 2010, and the gridded area-percentages data of different land use types in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The methods were as follows: (1) For extracting the climate FPE boundaries, the 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm isotypes in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s were calculated, and the 400 mm, 300 mm and 500 mm isotypes were set as the central line, northwest boundary and southeast boundary, respectively. The isotypes with an interval of 50 mm from 300 mm to 500 mm were used to connect the northwest and southeast boundaries to complete closed boundaries. (2) For extracting the land use FPE boundaries, both the area-percentages of cropland and grassland should be greater than 15% in each 1 km x 1 km grid, and the spatial extent should be contiguous distribution and also be contained in the ecological function regions of northern China. This dataset contains (1) the FPE delineated based on climate data in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s; (2) the FPE delineated based on land use data in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The FPE in northern China covered ten provincial regions including Inner Mongolian, Ningxia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu. The dataset was archived in both shp and .kmz data formats in 62 data files with the data size of 202 KB (compressed into 9 file, 161 KB). The research paper based on the dataset was published at the Journal of Geographical Sciences, Vol. 27, No. 9, 2017.
