Abstract:
Dataset of extreme drought and flood years in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yellow River over the past 2000 Years was reconstructed based on drought/flood records derived from Chinese historical documents. The reconstruction consisted of two-step process: (1) to assess the yearly drought/flood grades according to the historical records on drought/flood events at 26 stations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. These stations are Datong, Taiyuan, Changzhi, Linfen, Luoyang, Yan'an, Xi'an, Fengxiang, Tianshui, Lanzhou, Pingliang, Yinchuan, Hejian, Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, Anyang, Kaifeng, Xuchang, Nanyang, Xinyang, Dezhou, Jinan, Yidu, Yanzhou, Laizhou and Xuzhou. (2) To identify the extreme drought years and extreme flood years according to the threshold of the severity index and spatial coverage index for regional drought or flood occurrence with probability ≤10% in 1951-2000, based on the yearly drought/flood grades of 26 stations. The severity index of regional drought/flood was defined as the proportion of stations with severe drought/flood or the proportion of adjacent stations with severe drought/flood in the year. The spatial coverage index of regional drought/flood was defined as the proportion of stations with severe drought and drought totally, or heavy flood and flood totally in the year. Then the frequency per 50 year for extreme drought/flood in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River was counted. The method for the reconstruction was reported in details by Hao Z. X. et al (2010). This dataset files includes: (1) the sketch map of study area. (2) The table for the frequency per 50 year and the years of extreme drought in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yellow River over the past 2000 years. (3) The table for the frequency per 50 year and the years of extreme flood in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yellow River over the past 2000 years. This dataset is archived in .jpg and .xlsx data format, and consists of 3 data files with data size of 1.79 MB (compressed to one single file with 988 KB). The relevant paper based on this dataset was published on Resources Science, Vol 42, No. 1, 2020.
