Turpan Oasis is located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The geo-location of the Turpan Oasis is between 42°32′22″N and 43°12′50″N, 87°49′55″E and 90°46′35″E. The Turpan Oasis consists of a series of oases with a total area of 2,398.50 km² (Albers projection) and a total perimeter of 2,154.14 km (Lambert projection). The largest oasis covers an area of 1,210.16 km² and have a perimeter of 777.62 km. About 99.94% of the total oasis area is in Turpan (41.89% is in Gaochang District, 34.92% is in Shanshan County and 23.13% is in Toksun County), 0.06% is in Dabancheng District, Urumqi. The Turpan river system is composed of several rivers which nourish and maintain the existence of the Turpan Oasis. The main rivers include Baiyang River, Alagou, etc. Their main stream length is 185.70 km and 142.33 km respectively. The geo-location of the mountainous part of the Turpan rivers catchment is between 42°16′32″N and 43°51′10″N, 86°45′22″E and 90°48′4″E. The area of this part of the catchment is 15,492.64 km² and the perimeter is 1,636.78 km. About 63.07% of the catchment area is in Turpan, 19.86% in Urumqi, 16.98% in Bayangol Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, and 0.08% in Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture. The elevation of the mountainous Turpan rivers catchment was classified into 11 types. The dataset was developed based on Google Earth images, ASTER GDEM 30 m and in situ data. The dataset is consisted of (1) boundary data of the Turpan Oasis; (2) Turpan river system; (3) boundary data of the mountainous Turpan rivers catchment; (4) elevation classification data of the mountainous part of the Turpan rivers catchment. The dataset is archived in .kmz, .shp and .tif data formats, and consists of 59 data files with data size of 473 MB (Compressed to 5 files with 28 MB).
