Abstract:

Lake Victoria is located in eastern central Africa from 0 o29′N~3 o3′S, 31 o 35′E~34 o 53′E, occupied by three countries, they are Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. The area of Lake Victoria is varying in different year and seasons. Based on the Landsate Images of TM/ETM , as well as Google Earth, the boundaries of the Lake Victoria in 2000, 2010 and 2015 were developed. By Albers projection, the areas of the lake were 6.698X104、6.674X104、6.685X104km2 in 2000, 2010 and 2015 separately. It is obviously that it is the Africa's largest lake and is also the world's second largest freshwater body. The Lake Victoria is the source of the Nile River. The Lake Victoria has a winding shoreline, several small islands with an average elevation of the lake is 1134 meters above sea level. The average depth of the lake is 40 meters. It contains approximately 2,550 km3 of water. Water inflow to Lake Victoria is dominated by direct precipitation and thousands of small streams. The largest stream flowing into this Lake is the Kagera River flowing from northwestern Tanzania, the mouth of this river lies on the lake's western shore. Lake Victoria is drained solely by the Nile River near Jinja, Uganda, on the lake's northern shore. Lake Victoria supports Africa's largest inland fishery with more than 200 kinds of fishes and the lake basin is densely populated and intensely cultivated. Cotton, rice, sugar cane, coffee and bananas are the main crops. The data set is consisted of the data in three years of 2000, 2010 and 2015. They are archived in both .kmz and .shp formats. The size of dataset was compressed to 14.2MB.
