Abstract：

The Southwest China in this study includes Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chongqing City, Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province and Yunnan Province, as well as Lhasa City, Naqu Area, Shannan Area, Linzhi Area, Changdu Area and Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province (including Tanggula Township, the enclave of Golmud City). Based on the fourth (1990), the fifth (2000) and the sixth (2010) population census data, a total of 58 ethnic groups were counted, including 56 ethnic groups, undefined ethnic group and aliens' accession to Chinese nationality. The Shannon-Wiener Index was used to calculate the cultural diversity index at province, city and county levels in 1990, 2000, and 2010. Then the dataset of cultural diversity index in Southwest China (1990, 2000, 2010) was developed. The dataset includes data files covering cultural diversity in Southwest China in 1999, 2000 and 2010: (1) cultural diversity index at province level; (2) cultural diversity index at city level; and (3) cultural diversity index at county level. The dataset is archived in .shp data format, consists of 57 data files with data size of 23.9 MB (Compressed to one single file with data size of 14.9 MB). The data result shows that the cultural diversity of Southwest China exhibited clear spatial heterogeneity, with lower diversity observed in the northwest part of the region and higher diversity observed in the southeast part. The analysis paper based on this dataset was published at the Acta Ecologica Sinica, Vol.38, No.21, 2018.
