Abstract:

The Northern Cook Islands or Northern Group of Cook Islands is located at the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It’s geolocation is between 8°55′0″S and 13°20′04″S, 157°52′51″W and 165°52′44″W. The total area of the Northern Cook Islands is 26.16 km², and the coastline is 256.43 km. The Northern Cook Islands is located at the top of a submarine volcano over 4,000 meters below sea level. There are 5 coral atolls (including 181 islands, islets or motus) and one coral foundation island in the Northern Cook Islands. They are: Penrhyn Atoll, Rakahanga Atoll, Manihiki Atoll, Pukapuka Atoll, Suwarrow Atoll and Nassau Island. The biggest island is Tukao Islet, its area is 2.68 km², and its coastline is 20.28 km. There are 5 lagoons among the atolls, in which, the Penrhyn lagoon is the biggest one, it is 22.5 km long from northwest to southeast, and 13.5 km wide from northeast to southwest. Northern Cook Islands is in the tropical oceanic climate moderated by trade winds; a dry season from April to November and a more humid season from December to March, the average annual rainfall is more than 1900 mm. The natural hazard in the Islands is tropical cyclones. The Cook Islands is a self-governing in free association with New Zealand. The dataset was developed based on the Google Earth and related maps and references. The dataset is consisted of 15 data files and archived in the .kmz and shp data format with the data size of 3.08 MB (Compressed to 1.26 MB in two files).
