Abstract:

Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) is defined as the ratio or percentage of the vertical projected area of vegetation leaves, stems, and branches on the ground relative to the total area of the statistical area. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform, using the long-term series Landsat-8 OLI normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) dataset, we combined the maximum composite method (MVC) and Dimidiate Pixel Model to produce the annual maximum FVC dataset at 30m resolution within 10 km buffer area along the Serenje-Chipata railway, Zambia (2017). The study area of the dataset is 13°08′56"S ~ 14°24′19"S, 30°07′34"E ~ 32°43′22"E. The data value ranges between 0 and 1, in which, 0 means no vegetation coverage and 1 means full of vegetation. The dataset shows that FVC is mainly in the range of 0.4~0.6, accounting for 43.34% of the total area; the FVC ranging of 0.6~0.8 accounts for 40.27%; the FVC more than 0.8 and less than 0.4 accounts for 8.96%, and 7.43% of the total area, respectively. The data is archived in .tif data format in 30 m pixels with data size of 178 MB in three files (Compressed to one single file with data size of 34.6 MB). The report based on the dataset was Global ecosystems and environment observation analysis research cooperation: regional ecosystem trends along the Belt and Road.
