Abstract:

As a flagship wild animal on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the wild yak has been listed as a Vulnerable (VU) species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and it is also a first-class protected animal in China. Taking the Qiangtang Plateau, which is the core distribution area of wild yaks, as the research area, the authors adopted a combination of field transect surveys and model simulations to obtain the current distribution status of wild yak habitats. Transect surveys were carried out on the Qiangtang Plateau in May and August of 2019, August in 2020, 2021, and 2022. A total of 127 wild yak locations were collected, and the total area of the current habitats was found to be 251,000 km², with a concentrated distribution in the northeastern part of the Qiangtang Plateau. The Geo-FLUS model was used to simulate future ecosystem types and climate scenarios in order to predict habitat conditions, and the results of the transect surveys on the distribution of wild yaks on the Qiangtang Plateau as well as the datasets of the potential habitat distributions under different scenarios were obtained. This dataset consists of three parts: (1) locations of wild yaks; (2) current distribution of wild yak habitats; (3) predicted distribution of wild yak habitats in 2050. The dataset is archived in .tif, .shp, and .txt formats, and consists of 35 data files with data size of 9.55 MB (Compressed into 1 file, 376 KB).
