Abstract:

Dataset of dry-wet index in the Middle and Upper Reaches of the Yellow River over the past 2000 Years was reconstructed based on drought/flood records derived from Chinese historical documents. The reconstruction consisted of two steps: (1) To assess the yearly drought/flood grades at 12 stations including Datong, Taiyuan, Changzhi, Linfen, Luoyang, Yan'an, Xi'an, Fengxiang, Tianshui, Lanzhou, Pingliang and Yinchuan in the Middle and Upper Reaches of the Yellow River, which were calibrated with the written records on drought/flood events extracted from historical documents, such as the official history for each dynasty and chronicles, the local gazettes, the archives of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, etc. (2) To calculate the regional dry-wet index, which was defined as the difference between the sums of weighted frequency for “severe drought, drought” and “flood, heavy flood” for all stations over the region in 10-year moving window with yearly step. Moreover, to preserve the homogeneity of the series affected by the changing trend of available records in historical documents, the polynomial fitting equation of available drought/flood-grade data was used to de-trend the effect. The method for the reconstruction was reported by Zheng J. Y. et al (2006) in details. The dataset includes: (1) the dry-wet index in 10-year moving window; (2) the 50-year FFT filters for dry-wet index. In the dataset, the dry was shown as negative values and the wet was shown as positive, with a larger absolute value indicates a greater severity. The dataset covers a period from 133 BC (represent a 10-year window of 137-128 BC) to AD 1995 (represent a 10-year window of AD 1991-2000), with a few years or periods with data missing were marked as “N/A”. This dataset is archived in .xlsx data format, and consists of one data file with data size of 85.9 KB. The analysis paper based on this dataset was published on Resources Science, Vol 42, No. 1, 2020.
