Abstract：
In order to validate the MODIS based water body recognition and the suitability of the mathematical models for recognizing water bodies, five lakes in China, the Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province, Nam Co in Tibet, Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, Ayakekum in Xinjiang Autonomous region and Wuliangsuhai in Inner Mongolia, were selected for the data validation lakes. Three models are used for the research, they are: the combined model of NDWI and NIR, the band difference model and the FAI (Floating Algae Index) model. The Landsat TM/ETM data are used for the validation. The dataset includes three data files, (1) the date of the MODIS and Landsat TM/ETM , (2) statistics of the lakes area with three models and validation data; (3) spatial data of the lakes with three models and the validation data. The data was archived in .xlsx, .shp and .tiff formats, the compressed data size is 6.01MB. The research paper was published in the journal of Remote Sensing Information, No. 1, Vol.30, 2015.
