Abstract:

Vegetation coverage is one of the important ecological indicators in the field of remote sensing science and has a significant correlation with vegetation growth and biodiversity. The region of fractional vegetation cover dataset within 10 km buffer area along Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, Kenya (2017) is located in 1°16′31″S ~ 4°5′46″S, 36°48′35″E ~ 39°41′41″E. First of all, in the study area, the Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was acquired based on the Google Earth Engine and Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) optical images. Then, the annual maximum NDVI was composited in 2017 and utilized to compute Fraction of Vegetation Coverage (FVC) using a method of dimidiate pixel model. The data value ranges between 0 and 1, in which, 0 means no vegetation coverage and 1 means full of vegetation. The dataset shows that FVC is mainly in the range of 0.4~0.6, accounting for 42.55% of the total area within the study area; the FVC ranging of 0.6~0.8 accounts for 37.06% of the total area; the FVC more than 0.8 and less than 0.4 accounts for 9.48%, and 10.91% of the total area, respectively. The data is consisted of three files with data size of 439 MB, archived in .tif data format at 30 m resolution (Compressed to one single file with data size of 44.1 MB). The report based on the dataset was Global ecosystems and environment observation analysis research cooperation: regional ecosystem trends along the Belt and Road.
