Abstract:

The case of Wild and Forest-grown Ginseng in Temperate Mixed Coniferous and Broad-leaved Forest of Toudao Town, Helong City was listed as GIES Case No. 33. The case study area is located in Toudao Town, Helong City, on the eastern foothills of the Changbai Mountains. It has a history of approximately 1,300 years of ginseng collection and cultivation, and it was one of the major production areas of royal tribute ginseng during the Qing Dynasty. The video, themed “Scientific Traceability •Millennium Legacy”, focuses on the habitat mechanisms underlying the formation of high-quality wild ginseng. It systematically presents the distinctive ecological conditions of the case study area, including the temperate mountain climate at approximately 42°N, the shaded environment provided by mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, acidic dark-brown forest soil, organic-matter-rich topsoil, and high-quality water resources, and demonstrates how these favorable geographical and ecological conditions support the natural growth of wild ginseng, the accumulation of bioactive compounds, and the development of its distinctive quality characteristics. The video further presents a multi-source, data-driven habitat traceability system supported by the GIES Ground Station, as well as collaborative practices among research institutions, government, and enterprises in advancing the sustainable development model of “forest cultivation with ginseng” and the “Jilin Helong Forest-Grown Ginseng and Ganoderma Cultivation System,” which was recognized as part of China’s Important Agricultural Heritage Systems. Together, these practices establish an integrated research framework of “geographical baseline–quality verification-digital traceability–conservation and utilization–value transformation,” providing a representative case for ecological conservation, scientific traceability, and the “Two Mountains” transformation of high-quality geographical products. The dataset is archived in .mp4 data format, with a duration of 4 minutes and 35 seconds.
