Abstract:

FBR (Forest-Built Area Ratio) is defined as the ratio of forested area to built-up area within a given urban extent. This metric enables a standardized comparison of forest coverage across different cities worldwide and facilitates investigations into the differential balance between urban forests and the built environment globally. The global urban 10-m FBR gridded dataset was produced using GAIA urban boundary data and ESRI land-use data. The processing and calculation were implemented through an integrated workflow employing PyCharm, Google Earth, ArcGIS, and QGIS platforms. A sliding-window method was applied, with each window defined as a square region of approximately 2 km side length (i.e., the perpendicular distance from the central pixel to each window edge is about 1 km). The resulting dataset provides the Forest-Built Area Ratio at a 10-m spatial resolution for 983 cities worldwide. Data validation confirms that the FBR outputs show strong consistency with ESRI land-use data and high-resolution Google Earth satellite imagery. The dataset includes FBR gridded data for each of the 983 cities. Each file is named after the major administrative division covered by the corresponding city (based on FAO Global Administrative Boundaries). The dataset is archived in .tif format, and consists of 983 data files with data size of 53.6 GB (compressed to 3 files with 1.75 GB).
