Abstract:
The authors developed a global oasis yearly spatiotemporal distribution dataset (1995-2020) based on the ESA CCI-LC annual global land cover data (300 m, 1995-2020) and the long-term GIMMS-3G+ NDVI time series. Within the world’s drylands, a unified oasis identification criterion was applied, whereby oases were defined as landscape units supported by stable water sources and characterized by higher vegetation cover and productivity than the surrounding environment. Based on this criterion, the original land cover classes were reclassified, and land cover types within oases were further grouped into six categories: forest, grassland, shrub land, cropland, water body, and urban land, coded as 1–6 in the raster dataset. Using this approach, 26 annual global oasis spatial distribution raster datasets from 1995 to 2020 were generated and compiled into the Global Oasis Spatiotemporal Distribution Dataset (1995-2020). Accuracy assessment was conducted using stratified random sampling with 1,256 validation samples interpreted from high-resolution Google Earth imagery, yielding an overall accuracy of 0.85 ± 0.01. The dataset includes: (1) raster files representing the spatial extent of oases for each year in .tif format. The files are named as oasis_YYYY.tif, where YYYY is year. The spatial resolution is 0.009°. The dataset is archived in .tif format, and consists of 26 raster files with data size of 23 MB.
