Abstract:

The authors employ the No Ice Class vessels as a case study to evaluate navigation risks in Arctic waters. Utilizing sea ice data from 2014 to 2023 and applying the Polar Operational Limit Assessment Risk Indexing System (POLARIS), the research computes and maps the Risk Index Outcome (RIO) for No Ice Class vessels navigating these regions. The dataset comprises RIO values for No Ice Class vessels and surface cover types in Arctic waters from 2014 to 2023. The temporal resolution (update frequency) is 7 days for the 2014-2021 period and 14 days for the 2022-2023 period. RIO values typically range between -30 and 30, with -100 indicating impassable conditions. Land cover is categorized into five types: land (L), ice (I), water (W), ice shelf/land ice (S), and no data (N). The dataset is archived in .shp format, and consists of 2,556 files with data size of 5.44 GB (compressed into three files, 3.71 GB). The analysis findings from the dataset have been published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Vol. 12, No. 12, 2024.
