Abstract:

The authors took a case study to evaluate navigation risks in Arctic waters. Based on sea ice data from 2014 to 2023, the authors use the Polar Operational Limit Assessment Risk Indexing System (POLARIS) to analyze the Arc7 ice-class vessels Risk Index Outcome (RIO). It includes RIO values and land cover types for Arc7 ice-class vessels, recorded at 7-day intervals from 2014 to 2021 and at 14-day intervals from 2022 to 2023. The RIO values typically range between -30 and 30, with -100 indicating impassable conditions. Land cover is categorized into 5 types: land (L), ice (I), water (W), ice shelf/land ice (S), and no data (N). The dataset is archived in .shp format, and consists of 2,554 files with data size of 5.44 GB (compressed into 3 files, 3.71 GB). The analysis paper based on the dataset has been published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Volume 12, Issue 12, 2024.
